At last, here are the Winners of the Anagrammy Awards for February 2001. My apologies for the delay getting the results out this month, because of our domestic upheavals having our wooden floors sanded and polished. We don't have all the furniture back inside yet, so I am typing this with the computer on the kitchen table. A quietish month for voting with only 26 voters in. There were fewer lurkers voting than usual. ---------------- GENERAL CATEGORY This ended up a lot closer than I imagined it would. Mick Tully was a confident leader much of the way with Earle Jones always in contention. Earle finished well to pass him and a strong finishing Rick Rothstein on the last day. This was Earle's first win since 1999 and his 4th ever. 1st. Earle Jones with: 29 Russian roulette = Retries not usual. Eq 2nd.Rick Rothstein with: 26 After nine months = Met her infant son. Eq 2nd. Mick Tully with: 26 Is anagramming addictive? = I'm a victim; a sad, aging nerd... ---------------- ENTERTAINMENT CATEGORY Another close one between Mey and Richard G who never more than a handful of points apart. Richard closed the gap dramatically on the last day, but too late as Mey clung on to his lead. 1st. Meyran Kraus with: 37 Charles Dickens's 'Oliver Twist' = The classic writer's kids' novel! 2nd. Richard Grantham with: 35 Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman go their separate ways. = Media are drawn to think Scientology's a prime cause. 3rd. Jaybur with: 28 Disney's 'Mary Poppins' with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke = Hi, kids! A super, madcap, windswept nanny: Kids enjoy devilry! ---------------- TOPICAL CATEGORY As has become a feature of the Topical Category, there was another big field of starters here. The master of this genre, Tom Myers, began well and never looked like losing, cruising in with a 14 point margin. Minor placing were close with Mey just one point off equal third. Tom has won this category 6 times among his 38 wins. 1st. Tom Myers with: 37 Israel: Sharon versus Barak = Real risk! Has Arabs nervous! 2nd. David Bourke with: 24 Foot-and-Mouth Disease spreads in Great Britain... Dead beasts in a pit - a ruined farmer's soon got hit. 3rd. Jaybur with: 23 Now thousands of farm animals are slaughtered = Ugh! warn all farms foot-and-mouth disease's near. ---------------- RUDE CATEGORY Another Mey dominated category, with a great start picking up 6 of the first 8 primary votes received. 1st. Meyran Kraus with: 36 'Snow White's Nasty Adventures', The X-Rated Video = Sexy tart does in-and-out with the seven dwarves! 2nd. Tom Myers with: 28 A typical male thought process = A hot phallic car to get me pussy. 3rd. Janet Muggeridge with: 22 I am sitting on the toilet = I meant to let go shit in it. ---------------- SPAM CATEGORY Only two anagrams stood out here. Richard G pulled ahead slightly on Day 2 and 3, but he gathered up the last 8 primary votes for a very easy win. 1st. Richard Grantham with: 49 The program includes: BONUS AMAZING FAT ABSORBER CAPSULES, THE 30-DAY WEIGHT REDUCTION PLAN, PROGRESS REPORT, AND MUCH MORE!!! = Spammer! Not just size, of course, as Mey's offering here was a thing of real beauty, too. 1st. Meyran Kraus with: 38 T E S T I M O N I A L S ******* [snip] 2nd. David Bourke with: 25 INCREASE the size of your breasts! 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed !!! [snip] 3rd. Don P. Fortier with: 20 Hi. My name is Linda Rowe, [snip] ---------------- LONG CATEGORY Richard G and I were the only serious contenders here and he was a lot more serious than me. 1st. Richard Grantham with: 60 WOMEN Women are honest, loyal, and forgiving. 2nd. Larry Brash with: 42 Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead. 3rd. Jaybur with: 12 Martine McCutcheon Catherine Zeta Douglas ---------------- PEOPLE'S NAME CATEGORY A bit of controversy here about the correct spelling of my subject. Despite this, I led most of the way, only to have Mey with 10 points on the last day to catch me for a tie. This win now gives Mey an award in every category, the secong person to achieve this. However, when one looks more closely, he is also close to being the first person to have at least 2 wins in ever category. This was my 50th win ever and I stay at 3rd on the All-Time Table. Eq 1st. Larry Brash with: 29 Antonio Stradivarius of Cremona, Italy = Famous or rare violins in an attic today? Eq 1st. Meyran Kraus with: 29 Giovanni Pergolesi [An 18th century composer] = I love opera singing! 3rd. David Bourke with: 17 Ariel Sharon = Oh, ran Israel? ---------------- OTHER NAME CATEGORY Two strong anagrams dominated this one. Richard B's PLOagram and Janet B's Savoy were always close, but Richard was the stronger finisher. Richard is 4th on the All-Time Table with 44 wins. 1st. Richard Brodie with: 45 The Palestine Liberation Organization = Eager to ban, to annihilate, Zionist peril! 2nd. Jaybur with: 43 The Savoy Hotel = Oh! love the stay! 3rd. Richard Grantham with: 30 Where do I find "The Lost Mine"? = It's in the middle of nowhere! ---------------- SET CATEGORY My shamefully narcissistic attempt to win this category (you will have to excuse me as it is the only one that I have never one) look pretty certain until the last batch of votes which contained 4 primary votes for Mey. He pipped me by one point. 1st. Meyran Kraus with: 28 Did you know only these three motion pictures won the five most valuable and prestigious Academy Awards? = 'It Happened One Night': Mousy runaway heiress (diva Claudette Colbert) soaks a wonderful movie's witty mood. 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest': Wild guy tries to start a mutiny in a madhouse. Movie is hard and bawdy, people! 'The Silence of the Lambs': A murderous, devouring Lecter (Hopkins) dupes a woody SWAT team on a way to divinity. 2nd. Larry Brash with: 27 Five reasons why I ought to win the Set Category in the Anagrammy Awards = [snip] 3rd. David Bourke with: 18 A list of just five of the most gruesome tyrants, evil dictators and bloodthirsty despots of all the twentieth century: = [snip] ---------------- SPECIAL CATEGORY 5 experts in this category had 10 entries altogether. Mey's George Meredith poem led until the last three votes pushed Richard G passed him. Richard had 3 wins this month, giving him 60 wins all over. Mey had a fantastic month with 6 wins and reclaimed a share of the lead with Richard. Mike's win here gives him 21 wins, 17 in Special. 1st. Richard Grantham with: 27 [A poem by Karl Shapiro.] AUTO WRECK 2nd. Meyran Kraus with: 23 George Meredith Love in the Valley 3rd. Mike Keith with: 20 [Each line (and the title) is an anagram of the first line.] APT, NOT HIDDEN, TALE (FOR A MINOR) -- LEWIS C ---------------- AWARDSMASTER'S CHOICE AWARD FOR THE BEST NON-WINNING ANAGRAM. Several contenders here, including Mick Tully's in General, Richard G's in Entertainment and Janet B's in Other Names, were very attractive. However, it was Mike Keith's 3rd chapter of Lamentations that really should have won a prize in Special. Its length may have put some voters off, but it is well worth another look. It was very clever and witty.
