Here are the results of the last Anagrammy for 2001. Last month we had a record number of 40 votes received. This month that record was broken with 45 votes! Thank you all for your great support in voting and helping make the Anagrammy Awards an exciting competition. The increase in numbers of voters appears to be related to a number of things that we have introduced. This includes the email reminder list telling people that voting is open or is about to close, the little announcement window on the website that I created this month and the easier voting format, splitting the categories into Short and Long Category pages. The number of new members and lurkers really boosted the numbers, too. ---------------- GENERAL CATEGORY A good field of 14 starters went into battle here for 3 awards. I was delighted and a little surprised to see how well my anagram started off on the first day. However, the rest of the field soon caught up and the lead changed hands several times. Mick Tully came home strongly with 10 points on the last day. Lardy Girl who led much the latter days came a creditable second. The last vote split a tie for third between Adrian and Zoran. This was Mick's second win this year and his 14th ever. Lardy Girl has had 4 wins in this her first year in the Awards. Adrian has had an excellent first year with 10 awards under his belt already. There was an error on the voting page with Allan Morley's anagram, which was not discovered until 12 had votes been received. As a result, we will allow Allan to run his anagram again in the next competition. 1st. Mick Tully with: 38 Designated driver = Danger is diverted. 2nd. Lardy Girl with: 31 Fairy tales ~ are falsity. 3rd. Adrian Hickford with: 30 Sending a wrapped present = P.S. We need paper and string. 4th. Zoran Radisavlevic with: 27 Violets = It's love! 5th. Larry Brash with: 26 The used car salesman = Then a dealer scams us. ---------------- ENTERTAINMENT CATEGORY Richard Grantham did well here picking a subject that was both in Entertainment and was also topical with the recent release of the movie. It was also a great anagram. It was not surprising that he took the lead straight away and won with a massive 81 points. David Green did well to get within 17 points of him. 1st. Richard Grantham with: 81 'The Lord of the Rings' by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien = Thrilling nether-land journey of three old books. 2nd. David A. Green with: 64 The adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn = Cheerful Mark Twain story: Tender boys have fun. End. 3rd. Mey Kraus with: 41 The Blue Period of Picasso = Oh, pictures of pale bodies. ---------------- TOPICAL CATEGORY Osama bin Laden is still very much in the news and bin Laden anagrams did well again. This was pretty close throughout with Mr Topical (Tom Myers) the early leader, but there were string challenges late from Zoran and Allan. Where the last vote lost Zoran an award in General, the last vote here gave him a win here. This was Zoran's third winner. 1st. Zoran Radisavlevic with: 47 Surrender of Talibans = Arrest Bin Laden for us! 2nd. Allan Morley with: 46 Palestinian Authority = Antipathy unto Israeli. 3rd. Tom Myers with: 42 Osama bin Laden took to the hills = He's a Taliban demon -- shoot to kill! ---------------- RUDE CATEGORY Like the Entertainment Category, this was another category where the winner emerged on the first day. David Bourke is always a strong contender here and this month was no exception. This was David's 19th win this year and his 39th win all time, which puts him within one award off sharing 5th place on the All-Time Table. 1st. David Bourke with: 67 A wet snatch... ~ what a scent! 2nd. Mick Tully with: 38 Masturbation is healthy, ~ A horny habit stimulates! 3rd. Allan Morley with: 33 Anal intercourse = Unions are rectal! ---------------- PEOPLE'S NAMES CATEGORY 11 made the final list here and I wondered if I had a chance of doing well. I got off to a brilliant start on Day One, which gave me a big enough lead to win despite a sluggish performance on the last two days. 1st. Larry Brash with: 63 The late George Harrison = Singer: Altogether a hero. 2nd. Allan Morley with: 38 Louis Armstrong = Rumor: sings a lot. 3rd. Jaybur with: 35 Artist Amedeo Modigliani = I'd made oil into art images. ---------------- OTHER NAMES CATEGORY This was the most exciting category of this month's contest. Everyone led at some stage and the lead change hands with every batch of votes received. At one stage, only three points separated the field. Janet had a solid last day and pulled ahead to win fairly narrowly. It has been a great year for Janet with 19 wins. She has 31 wins in total and is 7th on the All-Time Table. 1st. Jaybur with: 57 The Subaru Legacy = Let's buy a HUGE car! 2nd. Adrian Hickford with: 52 Italy's Mafiosi = So, it is a family. 3rd. Thomas Hornikel with: 52 Dateline NBC = Bin Laden, etc. ---------------- SPAM CATEGORY When I saw Mey's spamagram, my heart sank. At least one other member decided not to post their spamagram, as it would have little chance here against Mey's. A strong finish from Allan Morley gave him second place, but it was Mey all the way! 1st. Meyran Kraus with: 69 The Mother of a 15 year old boy was cleaning and putting laundry away when she came across a large brown paper bag 2nd. Allan Morley with: 45 CONGRATULATIONS, morleyallan!! 3rd. Larry Brash with: 44 GET YOUR FREE LIFETIME VIP PASS ---------------- LONG CATEGORY Group referential anagrams certainly appeal to many voters. My send up of a boring bit of anagram research was well-received and opened a good lead in the early competition. A strong finish by Allan Morley with a traditional Christmas anagram pulled him to just 4 points behind me. Allan had a strong month with four 2nd places and one 3rd place, but alas no winners. Hard luck, Allan. My two wins this month gave me 15 awards for 2001 and 63 all up. 1st. Larry Brash with: 52 Angram research 2nd. Allan Morley with: 48 On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, 3rd. Jaybur with: 27 Prince Charles's modern English rewriting of Hamlet's soliloquy, 'To be, or not to be.' ---------------- SPECIAL CATEGORY This category never disappoints. Richard G and Mey were pretty close throughout the contest, with Richard finishing more strongly with one of his best ever anagrams. If you have not yet listened to the anagrammed music to the words, then you may do so at: Êhttp://www.anagrammy.com/poems-rg16.html Richard's 2 wins this month brought his year's total to 36, and an amazing 92 awards since joining the group in late 1999. Mey's 2 wins gave him 26 wins for the year and 76 altogether. Matjaz's third place gave him his first award and I am sure was a nice surprise for him. 1st. Richard Grantham with: 49 [A simultaneous anagram and approximate translation of a poem by Paul Verlaine, the first in the cycle "La Bonne Chanson" (1870). 2nd. Meyran Kraus with: 41 Ode on Melancholy John Keats 3rd. Matjaz Pihler with: 22 Words don't come easy to me, 4th.Richard Brodie with: 19 Edward Fitzgerald, in addition to translating Omar Khayyam into English, also did 32 quatrains in Latin. 5th. David Bourke with: 18 Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You - Stevie Nicks ---------------- AWARDSMASTER'S CHOICE AWARD FOR THE BEST NON-WINNING ANAGRAM. The Other Names Category was so close and the standard was so good this month that this award for the best non-winning anagram had to come from one of the runners-up. I personally loved Tom Hornikel's very apt little anagram. Thomas Hornikel with: Dateline NBC = Bin Laden, etc.
