The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

My Thoughts

I analyse the loved rhyme, and it illustrates the quandary of choosing between free will and fate: we are
free to embark on a vagabond voyage, but we might not really know beforehand what we are choosing.
The route ahead is determined by dovetailed choice and chance, and it is not possible to separate the two.

Let's bridle our horses, with no saddles on, and navigate into darkest overgrowth, harshest cold badlands,
heedless of mandated ethos.

At length, behind adulthood's vantage point, will we look down with regret on the herd's journey we avoided,
or thank the hardships and roadblocks of stalwartly shunning tradition for a worthy path?

As baseball great Yogi Berra stated, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it!"

THE GHOST OF A FLOWER
by anonymous

"You're what?" asked the common or garden spook
Of a stranger at midnight's hour.
And the shade replied with a graceful glide,
"Why, I'm the ghost of a flower."

"The ghost of a flower?" said the old-time spook;
"That's a brand-new one on me;
I never supposed a flower had a ghost,
Though I've seen the shade of a tree."

Tree? Huh? Has the poor haunter seen any of these appear:

Ethereal moonlit night shadow;
A full floodlit light shadow;
Serenader in the grove shadow;
Fated turkey in the stove shadow
Youngster's cotton legging shadow;
Farmyard mouse begging shadow;
Homemaker coffeepot shadow;
Home baker toffee spot shadow.

Oh, I'm afraid not!

"When the moon is in the Seventh House,
And Jupiter aligns with Mars,
Then peace will guide the planets,
And love will steer the stars...
This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius!

"The shrewd astrologer's view:
"That 'Hair' song was just a whim.
The usual alignment shift happens quite often.
'Let the Sunshine In'?! Where?
The peace and love died in legislation!"

November
by Thomas Hood

No sun--no moon!
No morn--no noon!
No dawn--no dusk--no proper time of day--
No sky--no earthly view--
No distance looking blue--

No road--no street--
No "t'other side the way"--
No end to any Row--
No indications where the Crescents go--

No top to any steeple--
No recognitions of familiar people--
No courtesies for showing 'em--
No knowing 'em!

No mail--no post--
No news from any foreign coast--
No park--no ring--no afternoon gentility--
No company--no nobility--

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member--
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds,
November!

New Year's Day

Yes, I see another bright beginning,
An opportunity to build what I am not.
Praised be those who can dump the rot,
Pass guilt by, and go on blissfully living.

The years change more frequently than we,
Our yearly changes no more than flimsy screens,
Placed to fully magnify our means;
Windows on a dimly lit world none can see.

Yet, truth be told, I know what's within.
My resolutions fail to fully touch my heart,
At the end of a year, surprise! I am, as at the start,
A remorseful deluder--half hope, half sin.

Come and clap hands to a tolling midnight bell,
While the brand new year begins.
Let's raise champagne high in a confidant toast
To youthful promise a night ushers in.

May your battles be few, purest pleasures many,
Worthy wishes and hopes truly fulfilled.
May confidence grow strong in the face of any sorrow
To strengthen that foundation to rebuild.

May the love in your heart always fill your days
And may serenity enwreath the soul.
May tranquil moments bless your life
And keep your spirit whole.
