Click here for the full list of noms for November.

Since we've picked up a lot of newbies recently (welcome all, it's great to have you on board!), I should just mention that each person is allowed to run only one anagram per category (except in Special). If you have more than one in a category, such as Elissa in Entertainment and Jesse in Other Names, please send your selection(s) for the final list to larry at brash dot net. If we don't hear from you in the next c.36 hours, we'll choose the ones we consider to be the best.

THE MOTHER -- Jaybur, 05:18:51 11/28/02 Thu

THE MOTHER

Of course I love them, they are my children.
That is my daughter and this my son.
And this is my life I give them to please them.
It has never been used.
Keep it safe. Pass it on.

=

A MOM

Oh, I pushed! Held them. Spent, too!
Gave them my heart, my fine boy and girl.
See! One, dark hair, the other, cute curl!
Yet thievish time passes, fate insists.
Family ties end, even this.

That's odd, the only reason I can think why that should be is that 'rich' has made it through unscathed. But it's not as if it's repeating an actual *keyword* from the original - otherwise I'd be rolling in cash myself. :) I say try again.

You can't try again these days, it just says the anagram is already in the archive and has been rejected. I think William has stopped resubmissions in this way 'cos he was getting swamped with them.

Actually, I have a Word document on my computer entitled "Potential Resubmissions.doc" which contains all the anagrams that I thought deserved to be accepted but weren't. I'm just gonna wait a few weeks then try again, maybe they'll have been cleared out.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen many of your anagrams there. Why don't you submit some??

A paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm -- Richard G, 02:32:33 11/23/02 Sat

Each line of this rough rewrite of Psalm 23 is an anagram of the others.

You are my shepherd, O beatific God; I shall not want. You lie me, Lord, in pastures of great verdancy.
=
You also readily give me nicer cool fresh water; and you lead me on this grand, best path of purity.
=
You protect and inspire me by good, thus will I fear no scourge; nor may I fear death's hated valley.
=
Your rod will placate the body. You've arranged, in case, a repast for me in sight of this loud enemy.
=
You did repair me if beset, or anoint this head gently: O, an act so my cup has overflowed regularly.
=
Your Spirit and His best angel, Lord, await me for ever; and I may occupy the house of God eternally.

You'll have noticed that each line begins with "You/Your", and perhaps that they all end with Y as well. Rather less obvious is that they also contain the same number of *spaces* (19), and that the 33rd character (i.e. letter/space - punctuation is assumed to have zero width) from each end is always an O.

The rotational symmetries of the Ys and Os at those key positions enable the complete set of lines to be assembled into a particular shape. Click here to see it (as a slightly dodgy homemade .gif).

[> Re: A paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm - Classic!! Special NOM -- Richard Brodie, 13:45:14 11/23/02 Sat

It would be interesting to know how you came up with the letter set. Did you deliberately make the overall length - 120 words, 468 letters - so close to that of the King James version - 117 words, 461 letters? (Of course it could not have been exactly the same, since 461 is not a multiple of six).

I like the choice of pivot letters. O is nice and symmetrical, befitting its intersectional function, and Y's triangularity makes it a satisfying choice for the star points.

Getting all six to contain the same number of words, while lining up the O's based not just on letter count, but letters plus spaces, and at the same time restating so beautifully every single idea and image in the original, makes this a truly mind-boggling achievement.
[4260]

>461 is not a multiple of six).

Not consciously, inasmuch as that wasn't the way I worked it out. Basically I tried to find a way that all the content of the original could be divided reasonably evenly into six bits (only the sixth verse has made it through on a line to itself). These turned out to be a bit under 100 characters apiece, so I aimed for that:

Y 31 O 31 O 31 Y (total = 97)

I fleshed out almost-complete versions of each line (using as bland a letter distribution as possible) and "averaged" the six to work out the leftovers required for each - including the exact number of spaces. Then I looked for a nice way to finish the first line ('beatific') that nicely complemented the other 5 sets of leftovers, and... then came the hard part. :)

>I like the choice of pivot letters. O is nice and
>symmetrical, befitting its intersectional function,

And they too are very Jewish when put together. ;)
