The Fourteen Times of Life -- Richard Brodie, 03:42:35 12/06/02 Fri

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to get, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time of war, and a time of peace.

What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
I have seen the travial, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.
He hath made everything beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart,
so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

=

O who was that fiery poet, at every time competent in morose yet sublime utterance?
O who, that spoke two at a time, about human vagaries? Ah! who indeed, that from
time to time, mentioned a condition that would make living miserable, yet memorable;
that made too, time after time, a marvelous contrast by opposing, time and time again,
one theme to another, be it a mode, a fate, a matter, an attitude, or a state, like:

the sick and those in great shape;
the weak and them that are in power;
that made of the heart and that made of the mind;
degenerate megalomania and an empathetic attitude;
in bitter inevitable doom and in certain hope;
too mean, too kind;
too beautiful, too plain;
the ingrate, the thankful;
manhood, womanhood;
the dead, the alive;
the awake, the asleep;
vexation, rest;
the premeditation, the afterthought;
the indiscriminate hate, the indiscriminate love?

Oh, who was this great breath-taking poet and man? It was the enigmatic Ecclesiastes!

(Eccl. 3:1-11)

[> [> Re: [The Fourteen Times of Life] A time to say thanks, Jaybur! -- Richard Brodie, 13:45:37 12/06/02 Fri

However, I'm not sure it merits Special.
No particular constraints, just the challenge
of the imbalance resulting from 30 Time's.
Probably best put into Long, as it is
certainly no more special than Richard's
and Paul's letter substitution pieces.

BTW, it's really 14 pairs of Times,
so a more exact title would be:

The Twenty-eight Times of Life.

>>However, I'm not sure it merits Special.
>>No particular constraints ...
>>Probably best put into Long

I'm having second thoughts about where this should go. One of the reasons Longs are excluded from the first page categories, is that they would tend to eclipse shorter entries and deprive them of their due recognition.

By the same token when ultra-long (>100 letter) borderline Specials (involving no particular constraints, but exhibiting other outstanding qualities), are put into Long (usually because the author already has a Special entry) the shorter 40 to 100 letter entries don't have a prayer.

The problem with leaving them is Special is that they would in turn be unfairly disadvantaged going against entries with unusual or multiple constaints - but at least they have a shot at showing or placing.

Do we need an intermediate Ultra-Long/Semi-Special category?

Re: The TV magician David Blaine = I've a climb and, at night, a dive * NOM * -- Dan Ives, 17:21:11 12/08/02 Sun

>And a magical anagram as well. PEOPLES NAMES NOM.
David Blaine is also an anagram for I A BAD DEVIL. I didn't use any sort of anagram script or computer program to do this. It just came to me as a revelation from God. There are two explanations for his feats: 1.) He is spiritually connected to a higher power (most likely satan), or he has his subjects set up to act amazed at staged tricks. I'd really rather not believe in satan, but the bible does say he exists. The beginning is near my friends. Jesus will soon return.

Seems new all right, fortunately! Nice catch Hans-Peter. *GEN NOM*

However, IMO "consider to" feels a little unusual - easily fixed by changing the word order:

Cost reduction = To consider cut.
[or perhaps 'Cut to consider']

to me. Another lesson learned!

Felonous = Foul ones -- Paul Pan, 22:25:13 12/06/02 Fri

[> Re: Felonous = Foul ones *NOM* -- Richard G, 15:10:28 12/07/02 Sat

>Felonous = Foul ones
>Felonious = Is foul one

The former is the better 'gram I think, but though 'felonous' does exist IMO 'felonious' is preferable by far. Gen nom for the latter, perhaps as "Foul one is ~ felonious".

I checked my trusty OED CD and you are partly right: "felonous" *did* exist, but has been obsolete for the past few centuries, replaced by "felonious" :)

> "Foul one is ~ felonious".
I really like your suggestion, it makes a mediocre 'gram look much better :)
