- Awardsmaster's Choice Award for Best Rookie Anagrammatist:
Even though he has only been posting since the beginning of December, George Missailidis, who posts as Simeon Galavar (anagram of I Love Anagrams) and now more so as sg, has really made an impact. I am sure we have more to come from him in terms of classics that do well in the voting, but he has certainly made a big impression with some ambitious specials. - Awardsmaster's Choice Award for Most Improved Anagrammatist:
It is very hard to award this in a year when Mey has been so utterly dominant after such a relatively muted year from him in 2017 because relatively, quite a few regulars people have taken a dip. However, two contributors managed to buck that trend in 2018 with increases of 5 wins. Jesse, with an impressive 9 awards compared to 4 last year but I am going to give the award to Rik Sengupta, who we welcomed back after a few years away, who picked up 5 awards having not won any for quite a few years and who has been unfortunately distracted for a lot of the year, and yet in those months he has posted, has averaged 40+ DFE points each time
- Mick Tully Memorial Award for Most Consistent Anagrammatist:
This year, I would like to honour Tony Crafter, who scored at least one award in each of the twelve months and is still on top of the rankings board despite Mey's onslaught. Tony also appears regularly in The Daily Mail's Peterborough column and is kind enough to announce others' appearances there, often sending them scanned images. - Daniel F. Etter Memorial Award for Anagrammatist of the Year:
Meyran Kraus has broken so many records it is scary. He gets this award by a country mile with 1143.16 DFE points, a breathtaking 57 wins in the monthly Anagrammy Awards (the best ever tally in the history of Anagrammy) Mey's strength in depth is obvious, when you consider he had to make a selection to reduce how many runners he had (down to the maximum of three) in seven out of ten categories and of course he had winners over the year in those three too, going on to win 2 of his 7 Grand wins in two of those three categories (General and Topical). I have a lot to thank Mey for, being a great consultant and his unparallelled skills at checking for oldies. He says he will be posting far less in 2019 and we wish him well with whatever he is doing (and breathe a sigh of relief, albeit with our tongues firmly in our cheeks!) - Special Awards for Services to the Anagrammy Awards:
I won't grant any special awards this year, though I would like to give my next door neighbour Morgan a mention for helping me do some archiving. And I am grateful to the return to the voting scene of a lot of old faces, who have responded to my renewed onslaught via email and social media. Recent mentions on Countdown and No Such Thing As A Fish have also given the awards a boost and I think we can have another successful year in 2019 - the competition's 21st and quite soon there will be 200000 posts to show for it! - The Larry Brash Award for Talent Spotting.
I had a look into who has nominated the anagrams that go on to win their category in 2018 and while I didn't quite into the depths of analysis as last year covering ratios of succes, it is clear that with 33/131 being nominated by Rosie Perera (more than me and db put together at 16 each), that she has won it hands down this year. Rosie is very generous with her encouragement of others and continues to be a key moderator, technical wizard and stakeholder in the forum.
As promised, the eligibility for winning this award has been added to the definition page
