Grandpa, Sat At Home
Sat at home, and I can't meet the grandkids here -
From the balcony I wave.
Sat at home, and their effervescent cheer
Is the one nice thing I crave.
Sat at home, and even if it's hot,
All those nights feel much too cold.
To the ones who spoke of pandemic woes -
It cuts deeper if you're old. - Long Category:

A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of be... ~ "You're with the circus, aren't you? Well, bet... - Awardsmaster's Choice Award for Best Rookie Anagrammatist:
I would like to award this to Thomas W Hunter (a.k.a The Truman Show!). Although he first posted as recently as November 8 announcing with some style the result of the US election, he has made an impact, posting two anagrams but winning a choice award with one and a first placed general in December, which went on to win a Grand for second in that category! I very much hope to see a lot of his material in 2021.
I would like to give honourable mentions to Murry Cameron (posting since July with 2 awards in that time) and also to Patrick Clark, who burst on to the scene with some slightly esoteric posts as well as some highly accomplished special tributes to Mike Keith. - Awardsmaster's Choice Award for Most Improved Anagrammatist:
This must surely go to Rick Rothstein, who posted a fair amount in 2018 and 2019 with only modest success (4 and 2 awards respectively) but after not posting at all in the first 6 months of 2020, went on to gain 7 awards in 6 months, including 3 in July alone (his best single month in 15 years!) and a rather fine 3rd place in the Topical category of this year's Grands.
- Mick Tully Memorial Award for Most Consistent Anagrammatist:
I can't help it but I would like to once again honour Tony Crafter, who scored at least one award in eleven of the twelve months and in March was 2nd in 2 categories by just 2 points, 4th in general by a single point and 3rd in special in a month with only 2 other entries, one of which went on to win the Grand award (above!). Tony also appears regularly in The Daily Mail's Peterborough column and is kind enough to announce others' appearances there, often sending them scanned images. It is no coincidence that he has won this more than anyone else since its inception :-) - Daniel F. Etter Memorial Award for Anagrammatist of the Year:
Meyran Kraus reclaims his traditional spot and gets this award by a substantial margin with 1112.32 DFE points (a great achievement and puts him once again on the board for members who have had a 1000+ year) and an unassailable 55 wins in the monthly Anagrammy Awards (only once surpassed by anyone - inevitably Mey himself in 2018) and he now has over 700 awards to his name. There was a rather scary moment as I watched the leader board develop as the record breaking number of votes came in, when I feared Mey could win a clean sweep. While that would have exceeded any possible predictions, it would have left the rest of us mere mortals a bit crestfallen. Still, he had a magnificent haul in the Grands too and is easily the first person to get to 100 Grands in the all-time list. I understand we are unlikely to have him around too much in 2021, as he has a lot of things on his plate, but here's offering a mighty Mazel Tov to the master and a lot of thanks for the help with the oldie checking. - Special Awards for Services to the Anagrammy Awards:
It was a source of much frustration to me over many months that I wasn't getting emails telling me who had voted* (see below), but after a lot of head-scratching and a couple of international Zoom calls (Covid19 has at least been good for something!) with Rosie Perera, that and a couple of other glitches in the Anagrammy code have been ironed out. Rosie has also stepped in a couple of times with opening and closing the voting and been there for me to bounce some ideas off, she had a solid year with 6 wins and led for a while in the Anagrammy Challenge category, eventually coming 2nd.
I won't bestow Grands for these two individuals, but a shout out to David Bourke for his willingness to offer help with oldie checking, and to Tony Crafter for his 'Storming of America'. DB and TC have also been helping me get the choice awards as fair as possible, something I struggled with in 2019. - The Larry Brash Award for Talent Spotting.
I introduced this new award fairly recently and while I would like to do the calculations to see who won it, I was advised by my forward-thinking team of forum moderators at the time that it would take a fair amount of additional admin to assess and so it transpires. I have had a new job since September 2020 and have had less time to post/archive even than usual, so I'm afraid this one will have to wait.
I hope you had a great competition and I would also like to thank the record-breaking 70 voters. *The email notifications helped me spot irregularities but also was great for compiling a list of who to remind when the voting period was open - our most recent new voters, who will hopefully become regulars.
This many votes really brings the competition alive and I hope you will agree the amazing turnout adds a degree of heightened endorsement to those people who won Grands this time by virtue of the popular vote. I am delighted to confirm the electorate came from a broad spectrum of backgrounds - young and old, male and female, professionals, students, many nationalities from around the world in multiple timezones, seasoned voters and first timers.
All the very best
